Dance Styles

At DanceTales we teach a wide variety of dance styles. Click on a category to see a list of upcoming classes for those underlying styles.

BALLROOM - Beautiful and artistic, these classic dances travel around the dance floor.

WALTZ - An elegant and romantic smooth dance characterized by its rise and fall action. Danced to music in 3/4 meter. Often danced at weddings and special occasions.

TANGO - A sophisticated, yet passionate and dramatic smooth dance characterized by its catlike walking actions and sharp head movements.

FOXTROT - Smooth, yet upbeat, this dance is characterized by its ease of movement and Broadway inspired styled moves. Debuting in 1913 by Harry Fox, the Foxtrot is the foundation for many of the social dances that followed.

VIENNESE WALTZ - An elegant and fast moving waltz characterized by its circular movement around the floor.

QUICKSTEP - This lively style is a quick version of Foxtrot mixed with Charleston and musical jazz influences; and is comprised of hops, skips, and kicks.

LATIN - Passionate, sensual, flirty, and fun describes these hot dances that have inspired a new generation of avid dancers.

CHA CHA - This fun and exciting dance is characterized by its distinct foot rhythm. It originated in the 1950’s as a slowed-down Mambo or triple-step Mambo. Continues to be a favorite!

RUMBA - Originating in Cuba as a courtship dance, this soft and romantic Latin dance is danced to a syncopated beat.

MAMBO - This fast and flirty Latin dance evolved from the fusion of swing and Cuban music and was brought to America in the 1940’s and 50’s and adapted as an American style ballroom dance. The footwork breaks on the second beat of the music.

SALSA - This hot and spicy dance evolved from the Mambo. It was brought by Cuban immigrants to New York, and then further refined. The footwork usually breaks on the first beat of the music.

SAMBA - A Brazilian ballroom dance of African origin. The style is to bounce steadily and smoothly in 2/4 meter. It is very fun & energetic and is generally danced to Latin music.

BOLERO - With similarities to Rumba, this slow and romantic Latin dance is characterized by its rise and fall action.

PASO DOBLE - This Spanish dance characterizes the man as the matador and the lady as his cape. It is based on Flamenco dancing and has a dramatic style.

SWING - These ever popular and upbeat group of dances developed from the swing style of jazz music in the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s.  These fun dances will have you stepping and rocking the night away!

EAST COAST SWING - This dance style can be done in single, double, or triple time and features underarm turns, spins, and a variety of other fun moves. One of the most used styles!

WEST COAST SWING - A sleek and slower style of swing where couples dance in a slot or line. It is very smooth and generally danced to blues rhythm.

LINDY HOP - Distinguished by it’s Charleston-type kicks, jumps, swiveling hip movements, and aerial moves, this dance was named after Charles Lindbergh’s epic 1927 flight.

JIVE - This fast and bouncy swing style is characterized by its fun sharp kicks and flicks.

OTHER - These are other fun and exciting dances that people enjoy dancing in a social environment!

NIGHTCLUB 2 STEP - A versatile and romantic social dance designed to fit contemporary soft rock. The 1 & 2 count rhythm is attractive, yet simple to learn.

HUSTLE - A fast, yet smooth dance that utilizes a pattern similar to West Coast swing, and is danced to contemporary pop and disco style music.

COUNTRY 2 STEP - This upbeat country western dance is usually danced to country music in 4/4 timing, and travels counterclockwise around the dance floor.

SPECIALTY - We offer a variety of classes to complement, challenge, energize, and inspire you!

DANCE THEATRE - This dynamic class is for dance students at the intermediate and above level, and offers an array of styles in ballroom, latin, swing, jazz, modern, and musical theatre.  Artistically and technically developing  oneself in movement styles, stage presentation, and learning choreography for demos and performances is a focus of this fun and challenging class.  Co-requisite: at least one other DanceTales group class.

JAZZ - Jazz dance and jazz music are traced to the origins of the rhythms and movements brought to America by African slaves; and reflect American historical events, cultural changes, and influences from music and social dances of its eras. Jazz dance is an art form founded on a firm technical base, yet has great varying styles.  It can be energetic and sensuous, clean and cool, subtle, or abstract and remote.  It is usually associated with musicals, television, and films.

CONTEMPORARY - This dance style draws on modern dance techniques as well as newer philosophies of movement, and has become very popular through shows such as "So You Think You Can Dance."

TEEN SWING/LATIN/BALLROOM - Learn the popular swing, Latin and ballroom dances with other teens.

DANCE CAFE - Come practice your dance skills at your own pace among other students.  Delicious coffee always hot and ready to serve yourself .
